The Basilica Endowment Fund of San Albino Roman Catholic Church, Las Cruces Friends of Chamber Music and The Border Book Festival, Inc. are delighted to present “La Catrina” String Quartet in concert on Tuesday, November 20, 2007. The group will perform at 7:00 PM at San Albino Catholic Church in Mesilla, New Mexico.

This wonderfully talented group of young classically trained musicians will bring a program built around the repertoire of Mexican composers, along with Franz Schubert’s compelling composition, “Death and the Maiden”. Their musical style and exceptional skill have been praised by audiences and musicians from all over the world. “They are musicians of great integrity and infectious joy...we admire them both as touching artists and as exemplary human beings” (Mark Steinberg, Brentano String Quartet) “Every note La Catrina plays is infused with energy, every gesture has a purpose and every phrase is meaningful. Their attention to detail and their dedication to classical music is a breath of fresh air.” (Keith Robinson, The Miami String Quartet)

Three of the musicians, Daniel Vega Albela, Jorge Martínez and Alan Daowz were born in México. The other, George Anthony Figueroa, was born in New York and studied in Puerto Rico. All are known for their repertoire of world music of the masters, having played as soloists with a variety of orchestras in México and the United States as well as given recitals in Japan, England, the United States, and México. Founded in 2001, the La Catrina Quartet has a triple mission: to work closely with living composers in order to promote the performance of new music, to promote Mexican and Latin-American art music and to perform the masterworks of the string quartet repertoire.
