Xavier Garza

A prolific artist and author, Xavier Garza received his BFA at UT Edinburg in 1994, and his Masters in Art History at UT San Antonio in 2007. As an artist he has exhibited his work in various venues through out Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Venues include the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio, The Arizona State Museum in Tucso~ The Mesa Southwest Museum·in Tempe, The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio and the Ice House Cultural Center in Dallas. His work was featured prominently in the books Contemporary Chicano/a Art: Artists, Works, Culture and Educatio~ Chicano Art for our Millennium and Triumph of our Communities Twenty Years of Mexican American Art.

As an author Xavier Garza's stories and illustrations have been featured in such publications as the Milwaukee Spanish Journal, The Corpus Christi Caller Times and the Mesquite Review. His short fiction was also featured in the anthologies Once Upon a Cuento (Curbstone Press 2003) and Cantos AI Sexto Sol (Wings Press 2002). He has authored and illustrated the books Creepy Creatures and other Cucuys (Arte Publico 2004) and Lucha Libre: The Man in the Silver Mask (Cinco Puntos Press 2005). Lucha Libre was listed as a commendable bookby Libros de Las Americas. A third book, Juan and the Chupacabras was released by Arte Publico Press in 2006. The Legend of Charro Claus and the Tejas Kid is slated for release by Cinco Puntos Press in the fall of 2008. A fifth book, Zulema and the Witch Owl is also slated for release in the fall of 2008 by Arte Publico Press.

Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Xavier Garza has made San Antonio his home since August of 2000.
